When we are sourcing our wallets, we come across some incredible stories. Designers and manufactures that decide to build a better wallet often approach their solution from a very different place. This is very true of Stewart/Stand the Brooklyn based design company that took a material mainly used in industrial filtering applications and used it to make some unique and durable wallets.
Stewart/Stand first arrived on the design scene in 2002 with their cool folding cuff links “Flatlinks” this success quickly led to innovation in other areas. The humble men’s wallet has been the most successful recreation by Stewart/Stand using a very fine stainless steel mesh they are able to create unique wallets that will stand the test of time and provide a unique fashion statement.
The unique name is derived from the family name of the founders, Theo and Paul Stewart-Stand. Their passion for designing products that are both sustainable and compact has led to successful designs across a broad range of products from men’s accessories to furniture. The brand has long been popular with the eco-conscious shopper.
We love the Stewart/Stand range because of the way they have completely redesigned they way a wallet has to be. Rather than using the traditional leather like 99% of other wallet designers, the brothers decided to look further a field for a wallet material.
The stainless steel mesh that they found is often used as an industrial quality filter in the manufacturing process. This steel mesh is lightweight, incredibly tough, feels as soft as silk.
Another key benefit to using stainless steel in wallet construction is that it will protect any cards that give off an RFID signal (such as A Swipe & Pay credit card or MyKi rail pass). This is becoming a big problem and is only going to become more of an issue as more industries start using this technology.
